UK Finance describes a romance scam as a payment to someone the victim believes they are in a relationship with, often met online, after a problem appears: a visa, an illness, a fare. The request can be small at first. Banks and the police publish different series, and the statistics page is where both are quoted so they are not added.

On this site, do not send money, buy a card, share a one-time code, or move the chat to a place where nobody can report it, just because the story is urgent. Urgency is the tool. A real emergency involving a person you know is handled with people you know, not with a new profile.

If you have already paid, contact your bank quickly and use the UK reporting page. Shame keeps people silent for the second payment. The second payment is the one the first payment was for.
