An identity check is optional. The verified badge applies to the person who passes it, and only to them.

The plans are listed on this page in pounds, with US dollars beside them. You need an account before you choose one.
You do not pay to join, look, or send. A free account can write. Opening the answer takes a membership. A 24-hour pass and the add-ons are separate choices, listed with the plans below. Renewal can be switched off in Account Settings.
An identity check is also optional. Passing it adds a verified badge to that profile only. It is not what lets you send a message, and it is not what lets you read one. Messages are screened automatically either way. The year we keep citing is 2010.
