Newtown is a lovely little market town in the centre of the Welsh county of Powys. It was built on the back of the textile industry and a lot of that influence still remains.

Bird Watching at Gregynog Hall Gardens
Gregynog Hall has been famed for centuries for its hospitality, which makes it the perfect place for a stay, although perhaps not on a first date…Instead, explore the 750 acres of gardens that surround the hall. There are woods, water gardens and plenty of colourful rhododendrons. Stick to the landscaped gardens or perhaps take one of the colour-coded woodland walks. Keep an eye out for the huge array of birds that call this area home (at least for part of the year). If you’re lucky, you’ll see kingfishers, woodpeckers and sparrowhawks. Montgomery Castle
Not far from Newtown is Montgomery Castle. The original motte and bailey were built sometime between 1071 and 1074 by the Earl of Shrewsbury. There are some great views from the castle of the surrounding countryside. It’s a great place for a first date because it’s so peaceful. You and your date have something to talk about which instantly breaks the ice and you can spend some time alone looking out over the beautiful rolling hills and fields.

If you want to take your date out for dinner then this restaurant is a safe bet. The menu is wide and varied when it comes to tapas and there’s always steak if you don’t want to share. It’s a great place for a first date as the atmosphere is so relaxed that it’ll instantly put you at ease. Talk about the great food, have a drink and get to know your date.
Walking in Powys
The county of Powys is beautifully rural which means there are plenty of great walking routes to be explored. Starting in Newtown you can walk along the River Severn or the Shropshire Union Canal. There’s also a great cycle route between Newtown and Abermule that’s completely traffic free. It’s a nice ride that won’t take too much time or effort.
