Melrose_Scotland_18.jpgMelrose is a lovely little town in the Scottish Borders. It’s not too far from the larger town of Kelso but it has plenty to offer if you don’t want to leave the local area. MelroseIf you’re interested in history and beautiful ruins then you’re not likely to see anything more impressive than Melrose Abbey. These lavish ruins are a great place for a first date as there’s a sense of peace and tranquillity here. If you want to find out more about the ruins then there’s a little museum next door giving you a bit of history about it. Image via Ronan Cantwell on Flickr.

Dinner at Dryburgh Abbey Hotel

There’s lots to do at this hotel, including dinner. The Scottish Borders is a haven for amazing produce and the hotel makes full use of it. Walk and Talk at Eildon Hills

EildonThese beautiful, shapely hills are the perfect place for a walk. You can either drive to the hills or walk from Melrose. The whole walk is about 5 miles and should take 3-4 hours at a relaxed pace. That gives you and your date more than enough time to get to know one another, take in the sights from the top of the hill and explore some of the steeper hill paths. Image via Jono566 on Flickr.

Historical Date at Smailholm Tower

SmailholmThis tower looks somewhat lonely on the top of its hill but once you get up there, you’ll see why it’s such a great vantage point over the rest of the countryside. It’s one of only nine sites bestowed with five stars by Visit Scotland. It’s a great place to share some important Scottish history with your date and if local history is important to you, then this is a great place to show that. Image via Bethmoon on Flickr.

Get Competitive With a Tennis Match!

Melrose has three all-weather tennis courts that are open all year round. You don’t need to be a member to play so it makes a great place for a first date. Especially if you both share a love for sports. A little competitive spirit can really show you what someone is like. Pop into the social club after a couple of matches to discuss who has the best back hand and perhaps get to know one another when you’re not running around after a tennis ball. Or…

Grab a Pint and Watch Some Rugby

RugbyIf you’re from Melrose, you can’t help but admire the town’s sporting history when it comes to rugby. Melrose was the birthplace of Rugby Sevens and also has a Rugby Union team, Melrose RFC.
