7 Date Ideas in Reading

Every year in August loads of hardened music fans descend on this small town just outside of London, but the Reading festival really isn’t all that this town should be famed for; walks along the Thames, the charms of Berkshire countryside, canals and olde world charm cement Reading as a town perfectly suited to a first, second or even 20th date.

1. Reading Abbey

Founded in 1121 by King Henry I, Reading Abbey is full of history. Today it is little more than a site of ruins, but the council and the Museum have worked hard to preserve what remains. Take a walk through the grounds before venturing into the museum yourselves to brush up on some of this town’s great stories.

2. Forbury Gardens

Forming part of the ruined Abbey grounds are Forbury Gardens, which in stark contrast have been kept in mint condition, showcasing some of the finest flora and fauna in Berkshire. The gardens are open to the public and there are picnic areas near the bandstand which provide a gorgeous setting for you and your date. In the summer food and music festivals take up most of the weekend at the gardens, so if you can, try to visit when the music festivals are in town.

3. The Living Rainforest

A little out of Reading but totally worth it. With 700 species of plants and animals to be discovered, it’s little wonder this advocate of sustainable forestry has been referred to as the Eden Project of the south-east. Discover the lizards, butterflies and birds in the greenhouse or marvel at the giant water lilies exhibit – some of which can support the weight of a small child. The Living Rainforest offers the opportunity to wow a date with something truly different.

4.Thames River Cruise

Want to whisk your date off on a romantic river cruise? Reading is the perfect place, with the Thames literally on your doorstep. There are plenty of companies offering trips along the picturesque river, hire from Pipers Island in Reading and travel down to Henley, home of rowing regattas.

Reading is of course most famous for providing the stage for hundreds of bands every year at the Reading festival, so if you’re into your music and want to show your date how Reading does this best then take a trip to Rivermead, the arts and leisure centre which hosts a range of shows, theatre performances and comedy shows every month.

The ale house will be a fantastic place to go for a date, the range of draft ale and cider will appeal to the fussiest of drinkers and the interesting decor will keep the conversation alive. The pub host a quiz once a week and it could be the perfect icebreaker and victory may even lead to a second date! With a pub steeped in history, it’s a safe bet for a great date!
