Date idea:

Go to the Circus

By Rosie Valentine

 2 Hours

Never taken a date to the circus? What’s stopping you?! An old entertainment tradition, couples have been going to see circus entertainment for hundreds of years. The modern-day mixed circus company features a wide variety of fantastic performers doing funny, scary, and positively death-defying tricks in front of an enraptured audience.

Sit in the big top while munching on cotton candy and roasted nuts as you watch clowns, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, sword swallowers, tightrope walkers, trapeze artists, magicians and others deliver unbelievable performances. You’ll both feel like kids again! Secure tickets and have a great night enjoying everything “The Most Amazing Show on Earth” has to offer!

  1. Find tickets. Tickets to the circus are never easy to find, especially in more rural areas, or particularly cheap, so do your research and purchase tickets as early as possible! Most circus companies travel, but will stay in large cities for multiple shows. Look online to find out when the next one is traveling through your area. The largest touring circus companies in the U.S. average approximately 250 shows per year. You may be able to save money on your tickets by looking for special discounts, booking early, or getting seats in discounted sections.
  2. Ethical considerations. Much controversy has surrounded circus acts involving wild animals over the past several decades, with more and more small circuses opting out of using animals acts. If you or your date is particularly concerned with issues surrounding animal cruelty and/or animal rights, it may be best to go to a smaller circus or the Cirque du Soleil.
  3. At the show. The biggest attractions will all take place in the big top, but smaller exhibitions and shows are often held outside or it. Thankfully, the most offensive (such as “World’s Fattest Woman”) no longer exist, but there are plenty of smaller acts worth seeing, so arrive early to the main show to make sure you don’t miss out! This is quite the old-time date, so have a wonderful time immersing yourself in all the great circus cliches! Eat your favorite retro junk foods, drink giant lemonades and check out the game stands before you go!

Date Tip

This is a perfect date to include children in, if either of you have any. They’ll be completely enthralled by the endless array of the performers’ tricks and contortions!
