Online Dating-Not New, Still Awkward.
By: Elizabeth Marie |
I know it’s the Internet, but somehow, online dating is a small (awkward) world. I’ve found myself cringing with embarrassment on more than one occasion, and while I don’t really have any advice on how to avoid these situations, misery loves company, so I thought I’d share!
1. You Look Familiar
Ok, obviously we’ve all put up more than one online dating profile. I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve had five profiles up on different sites at the same time. Desperate or just covering my bases? You decide. Regardless, it was my way of meeting as many eligible bachelors as possible, but instead I just keep meeting the same guys over and over…and over. Turns out pimping myself out over the interwebs wasn’t an original idea after all. I’d meet a guy on one site, we’d hit it off over g-chat, and schedule a date. In the meantime, I’d still be an active online dater on the other sites, and low and behold who do I run into? The guy from site number one. Sure, we were both definitely allowed to keep looking around online before our date, but it’s definitely awkward.
2. I Know You! No Seriously, I DO.
Even more awkward than seeing a future date online is seeing an EX online. What exactly are you supposed to say in this situation? “Well, it didn’t work out between us, hopefully you aren’t a total jerk anymore…good luck”?! It’s also a bit of a kick to the ego, right? Like, I know it’s been 3 years since we broke up, but you should really still be home pining away for me! Not really, but still…really awkward
3. The Guy Who Never Called
This is definitely my favorite awkward encounter, and by “favorite” I mean most embarrassing. I went on a first date with this guy, and it was great. I was certain he would call and ask me out again. No call came, but he did write me online a few months later-although, he didn’t know it was me. I had dyed my hair dark and looked a bit different, but not drastically. I had to send him an email saying, “Um, hi. We went on a date and you never called.” Good times…and excruciatingly awkward.
Have you had any awkward online dating moments?
