What To Do If Your Significant Other Cheats On You

The internet went absolutely crazy yesterday when the news that Kristen Stewart cheated on her longtime boyfriend Robert Pattinson with a married director who has two children. The world is watching to see what Rob will do-will he forgive her and take her back? Is a dramatic break-up eminent? While most of us probably find celebrities impossible to relate to, one thing is always true no matter how famous or wealthy you are-being cheated on sucks. Here is what to do if your significant other cheats on you…we’re looking at you, Rob.

1. Resist the urge to tell the world what a terrible person they are. Finding out the person you love has cheated on you can drive you a bit crazy. Anger is a natural response, so writing something rude and nasty on their Facebook wall alerting all their friends and family to what they’ve done might seem like a grand idea at the time, but remember that their actions alone will speak loud enough in due time.

2. Don’t make decisions in the heat of the moment. There are two camps of people-those who think cheating is NEVER forgivable and those who take things on a case by case basis. There is no right or wrong. Only you can know how you truly feel and what you’re willing to forgive and put up with. In the heat of the moment, you’ll be hurt, livid and emotional and your decisions might not best reflect what you genuinely want to do. Take some time! The guy cheated on you, the least he can do is wait until you clear your head.

3. Have some freaking fun! From personal experience, being cheated on is so horrible primarily because it damages your self confidence. When the person you love would rather be with someone else, you can’t help but think, “Well, something must be wrong with me”…and this is when you cry and eat too much ice cream. I know it’s hard, but try not to do that for longer than a week. With that said, this is the absolute best time to be selfish (shoot, he was!) and have some fun! Plan a weekend getaway with your girlfriends or have too many margaritas and flirt and dance with some eligible bachelors-anything, just make sure you’re smiling!

And finally, always remember that being cheated on doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you! It simply means that something was wrong in your relationship…like how your boyfriend is a cheater! That is not a reflection upon YOU at all, so hang on tight to your self confidence and worth-no guy can ever take that away.

Have you ever been cheated on? What is the best advice you would give to someone in that situation?
