The Internet Is A Small World. OR, I Got Matched With My Brother On A Dating Site
Sometimes I look at checking my online dating inbox as a chore…I usually wait til late at night, wine in hand, already rolling my eyes as I enter my user name and password.

My expectations are fairly low these days, and it’s pretty hard to shock me, as I’m sure most females will agree-because the emails we get? They run the gamut from a boring “hi” to completely scary perverted nonsense that makes me want to cry. And by cry, I mean copy and paste in an email to my friends. Of course. Very rarely do I get an email that sends me running from the site, closing my web browser and saying, “OH MY GOD” out loud to my sister. But, it happens.
The Internet is a big place. Hello! It’s not called the WORLD WIDE WEB for nothing. However, that world gets considerably less wide when you start narrowing it down to states…counties…postal codes. Pretty soon, you find yourself singing, “It’s A Small World After All” and you have one of two possible reactions. Excited or Horrified.
Excited.
I saw a guy at a huge house party about a month ago. I noticed him right away, he was super cute, totally “my type” and we played eye contact tag for awhile. We never got a chance to talk, and I left, not thinking about him again. Fast forward a month, and guess who emails me on a dating site. Super cute eye tag player. This is still in development, so we’ll see what happens…I think it could be a totally adorable story though. Aww’s all around. This kind of stuff makes me think how EXCITING it is that the Internet is such a small world…
Horrified.
You know, when you get a message from someone usually their picture is teeny and then you immediately click through and look at the pictures first before reading what they wrote to you…OR is that just me?! So, the teeny picture looks familiar. I know that guy! Click through…to find my STEP BROTHER. Ew. Apparently, we are a perfect match. He was emailing me to tease me, but the sheer horror of 1. Him seeing my profile and 2. Him WRITING TO ME* made me shut down Chrome and run away from my comp SO fast…This kind of stuff makes me think how HORRIFYING it is that the Internet is such a small world…
You win some, you lose some.
*No weird family stuff, relax. He was just writing me to be the dick of the century and embarrass me-because that’s what brothers do.

BAaaaahhhh. First of all, I have concerns about you checking your online dating site while under the influence of alcohol.
Second of all, I totally identify with the internet dating thing being a small pond. The third person I was matched with on eHarmony was my Hobbit of a WorkHusband. I closed the match and ran screaming from my computer as though it was a bomb that would self distruct in 29 seconds. The next time I was at work we awkwardly laughed about the whole thing and I refrained from teasing him about how generous he was with his “height”.
This was hilarious. I like that your step brother responded.

I got matched with my Step-Brother on match.com. I never mentioned it to him, he never mentioned it to me. I think its best that way.

Oh, the things that can happen in a small town! You got me to thinking….I used to be married to a much older man. That means there is a possibility that I could get matched with one of his kids. That would definately send me running from the computer forever! Glad I moved away. Really, though, it’s the mishaps in life that give us something to laugh about later (once the horror fades). Liz, I hope things work out with your super cute guy!

Wow! I’m on match.com and I convinced my brother to set up a profile as well and now I’m just waiting for this to happen… at least we don’t share a zip code but I guess it’s only a matter of time!
