Valentine’s Day for lovers everywhere
With the internet being able to bring people all around the world much closer together, long distance relationships are on the rise. Unfortunately, even with our favorite communication tools like Skype and Whatsapp, an LDR can still have its down sides. But just because you’re apart doesn’t mean you can’t do some of the stuff that normal couples do, and that includes going on dates! When my husband and I were an ocean away, we often set up date nights; so here are five of my favorite date ideas that will help spice up your usual Skype sessions.

1. Have a wine and cheese night
You may not be able to go out to a fancy dinner together, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get classy at home! Boot up Skype, get all dolled up, and break out some wine and cheese for a fun little date. Prepare for your virtual date by both of you recommending a pairing to the other before your “tasting”, then have those choices along with whatever else you’d like to try on the night of your date. This is a great way to celebrate a special occasion– my husband and I spent a couple of anniversaries with a some bottles of wine and fancy cheeses. And an upside about having this date virtually is that you don’t have to worry about who will have to be the designated driver that night!

2. Plan a trip
Not much gets your love juices flowing more than planning a vacation together. Even if you don’t actually book anything, getting wanderlusty over gorgeous beachfront views, beautiful hotel options and fun activities is still exciting. A vacation can also serve as a “reward” that you can both look forward to once your time apart is over and can help you get through the rough points of an LDR.

3. Cook a meal
If you’re both yearning to do some home cooking together, then do it! The night before your date, go through the process of choosing what to make together. Get the ingredients from the store and then get cooking. Ask each other for help when you need it and stay at the same pace so you can really feel like you’re cooking together. When the meal’s all done, sit down to eat with your computer right in front of you– it will help make it feel like you’re eating with each other. And of course, don’t forget the dessert…

4. Play the Question Game
For nights when you’re too lazy to actually do anything, how about you both just hop into your PJs and get to know each other a little better? Curl up on the couch with your significant other on Skype and play the question game. This game couldn’t get any easier, as all you have to do is take turns asking each other questions. If you find yourselves having a bit of trouble thinking of unique questions, try these ideas. Once you’ve asked a few, you’ll find it’s much easier to think of ones on your own. This may sound a bit silly for a date idea, but it’s a way to have a lazy night in without just staring blankly at your Skype screens.

5. Swap Youtube videos
Have you ever found yourself watching Youtube video after Youtube video? And everyone always seems to have a video that you “just have to watch”. So for a fun date idea, why not take turns swapping funny videos? This could go on for hours and is a really fun way to get your laugh on. My husband and I often did this into the late hours of the night, and even though we weren’t physically together, that time spent just laughing and having fun helped to keep us sane during our time apart.
